Fucking Twilight [13 Jul 2010|01:08am]
Okay, previously I've been pretty apathetic about Twilight. Not my cup of tea but if you want to read or watch something that's generally accepted as pretty terrible then fine.
But now... How much longer do we have to wait for the next Neil Gaiman book now? Dammit!

OKCupid (wait, what?) [23 Jan 2010|06:26am]
Okay, (hah) not so much about OKCupid the dating site but about the OKCupid blog.
The creators of OKCupid have been writing blog entries for the past few months using the massive collection of statistics from survey answers and messages sent/replies returned to analyze what works and doesn't work in the world of online dating. Also the geographical distribution of fun things like how acceptable a rape fantasy is or how often people shower.
If you're a fan of statistics and amateur psychology the whole thing is a very interesting read.

Avatar. (there is no bending in this post) [23 Dec 2009|02:04am]
So I saw Avatar in IMAX 3D today.
tl;dr = pretty good.

The general consensus seems to be that if you've been caught up in all the hype and are expecting the best movie since Wild Wild West you're going to be somewhat disappointed, but if you're just going to see a cool movie with some badass special effects work you will not be.

Story takes a lot of generic elements from other movies/books. Generic sucky guy gains access to a high powered alien body (EVA-01) and is instantly freaking awesome with no training whatsoever. Also he meets an alien girl (Pocahontas) and they fall in love.

Special effects and the world's scenery are undeniably beautiful. Not sure how much of it is the IMAX 3D (the whole movie is in 3D) and how much of it is the movie itself. I'm actually somewhat doubting how much of an effect the 3D had on it, but yes. This movie is very pretty.

Music was nice sometimes, set the tone other times, did it's job well enough. I don't recall any songs standing out so nothing too extraordinary but not particularly a shortcoming.

It's two and a half hours long but doesn't feel exceedingly long. Keep your expectations tempered and it's worth seeing. Not sure if the IMAX 3D (holy shit $18.50 wtf) is worth it but it definitely makes a beautiful movie prettier.

Oh yeah, bring a friend so you can snark at the random ridiculous points like the perfectly placed feathers or the Lancers from Gears of War.

About diet and exercise [08 Dec 2009|03:51am]
So um. Not really my typical post, but in the past few months I've been hearing a whole lot of incorrect information being passed around about diet and exercise, primarily referring to weight loss.
I make no claim to be an expert, and it's possible some of this information may not be entirely correct. However I've done a lot of reading on the subject and I would like to think I'm intelligent enough to condense it down into what's most important and what just doesn't work.
A lot of this is going to be about weight loss, but bear in mind what goes for healthy weight loss also tends to go for healthy living.

We can start with common sense.
How do you get healthy, get fit, and lose weight (assuming you need to lose weight)?
Eat right. Exercise.
Pretty much anyone can tell you that, but for some reason people have a hard time accepting it.

As far as weight gain and loss goes, your body works on a relatively simple system. You burn somewhere around 2000-2500 calories a day. If you generally consume more than this amount you will gain weight. If you consume less you will lose weight.

The other thing to take into account is carbohydrates. Carbohydrates spike your blood glucose level which in turn leads to increased insulin production and from there an increase in body fat deposits.

Single easiest, most effective change: stop drinking soda.
Soda is FILLED with empty nutritionless calories and has a ton of simple carbohydrates that your body can easily digest into glucose.
Cut it. Completely. Replace it with water if possible. Fruit juice is almost as bad.

Exercise.
Yeah, not nearly as easy. Bear with me though.
ANY exercise is good exercise. If you don't want to work hard a walk every day, a few pushups in your bedroom, or a short trip to the gym a couple times a week is a fantastic improvement over doing nothing and WILL make a difference.

On exercise:
If you want to burn fat, you're doing it wrong.
First of all, cardio. Do it. Get your heart rate up! It doesn't have to be running, biking, or whatever other boring cardio you hate. Just do something to get your heart rate up. Play a sport or something.
Secondly, interval training. A lot of people hate cardio because they think they have to get on a treadmill for three hours. Not only is it unnecessary, it's ineffective. Interval training is interspersing short periods of regular exercise with short periods of full out give-it-everything exercise. Extremely summarized, your body works hard, burns tons of calories, gets used to working hard, gets stronger, and everyone wins.
Interval training is fantastic for burning calories, getting stronger, and getting faster.
important: Do not go out of your comfort zone while exercising. Pushing your limits is good, breaking them is bad. If you feel like something is wrong or you are in pain stop. Also, stretch before exercising.

Back to food for a bit!
The soda thing is great, but what else should you do?
-Move away from simpler carbohydrates like processed grains and sugars to more complex carbohydrates like whole grains
-Drink more water
-More: Vegetables, meats & proteins, fruit (fruit does contain a lot of sugar, but in whole form contains a lot of nutrients and makes a healthy snack)
-Less: Processed foods, fast food, junk snacks
-Eat smaller meals. Don't be afraid to snack (not on junk food please).

Into a bit of nutrition here...
-Cut sodium! A lot! Almost everyone consumes too much sodium. This can cause high blood pressure and recent research has shown that it can lead to increased risk of kidney failure.
-Eat organic foods. This one is a bit hard, as it's harder to find a selection of organic foods, and they are invariably much more expensive. However! Organic foods tend to have vastly higher nutritional values all across the board.
-Omega-3 fatty acids. I'm sure you've heard of it. Most often it comes from fish or flax seeds. Purported health benefits include reducing cancer risk, lowering cholesterol, improving brain health, and improving the immune system. Why do you need it? Actually you need it mainly to correct the imbalance in most diets of Omega-6 fatty acids to Omega-3 fatty acids. The optimal ratio is 4:1 Omega-6 vs. Omega-3. Modern diets tend to range from 10:1 to as bad as 30:1.

Oh, and don't forget to splurge once in a while. Anyone who tries to eat entirely healthily every meal every day is going to go a little crazy, especially at first.

Super quick summary:
-Exercise
--Cardio
---Interval training!
-Healthy Eating
--Fewer simple carbohydrates
---Cut soda
--Weight gain/loss = calorie intake/burn
--Nutrition and stuff D:

Wow. I'm not really sure if anyone's going to read that. Anyways, hope that helps someone, because that ended up taking a lot longer than I expected to write :P
